The history of The Xara Palace Relais & Châteaux, opened in 1999, is inextricably linked to that of Mdina, its walls forming part of the bastion walls that surround this hilltop city.
Upon their arrival in Malta, the Knights of St John were granted Citta Notabile, ( Noble City) as Mdina was then known. The Xara Palace was built in the 17th Century as a residence for the noble family Moscati Parisio. During their 268 year stay in Malta the Knights embellished, fortified and rebuilt Mdina so that today we have a fascinating and barely altered jewel in our heritage.
The Xara Palace Relais & Châteaux incorporated their exclusive, gourmet cuisine restaurant, the de Mondion, into the bastion walls – not just any old terrace with a view! This is a truly unique establishment, full of charm, character and calm for the pleasure of the discerning visitor. Whether you are after a honeymoon, a wedding, a cultural stay or simply an exclusive getaway, this place has it all.
Comfort and class is what you expect from a 5-star hotel housed in a beautifully restored 17th century palazzo.
These rooms form part of the palazzo’s “piano nobile”, an imposing arched open corridor overlooking the glass roofed internal courtyard, a beautiful feature of grand architecture.
This uniquely designed accommodation is set into the bastion fortifications and boasts simply stunning panoramic views of the entire island of Malta stretching out to the Mediterranean sea in the distant horizon.
These charming rooms are set on top of the terrace, overlooking the glass-roofed internal courtyard and feel more like private apartments rather than hotel rooms.
Making excellent use of the high ceilings to allow for a specially designed spiral staircase to be used to create a split level suite, the bedroom space on the upper level is kept entirely separate from the very luxurious sitting room beneath – effectively recreating the room’s original purpose.
Upon setting foot in one of the Deluxe Suites with Panoramic View, it becomes instantly apparent why these are the most sought after rooms at The Xara Palace Hotel – set directly into the bastion fortifications surrounding Mdina, these suites enjoy a truly remarkable, unhindered, breath-taking view of Malta.
Each of these deluxe suites is unique in its own way, all retaining the original features of the Palazzo and set on a single level, providing a spacious and light-filled luxury seating area, with a restful palette of colours used to decorate these accommodations in style. Further complimenting the décor, these suites all feature the comfort of fine linen and luxurious king sized beds, large marble clad bathrooms with plenty of natural light.
Truly one of a kind, this suite is unique in decor and location within the walls of this ancient palazzo, proving to be an extremely sought-after suite with 65 sq m of space split on two levels.
On entering the room, elegant grandeur is clearly visible with eye-catching original features making the first impressions of this suite a true experience.
This grand suite offers an interesting selection of period pieces of furniture – from an antique dining table for 6 persons to a period writing table, an antique chest of drawers and an imposing guilded mirror of impressive dimensions. All this is expertly complimented by carefully selected soft furnishings and drapes, comfortable sofas and arm chairs, old lamps and original works of art.
