Location: Kalkara, Malta

After the British occupation of Malta, the island’s inclusion within the British Colonial Empire was formally ratified by the Council in 1814, after Napoleon’s first abdication, and confirmed by the Congress of Vienna in the following year.

In the time of the Order of Saint John, there was an official who guarded the entrance of the Grand Harbour for any galleys, which used to sail in it. The galleys would later be examined for any contagious diseases. Quarantine regulations were very strict and scrupulously followed at the Barriera.
